Introduction:
This course will guide students through the fascinating development of mathematics and statistics. It begins with major historical controversies in mathematics and explores how these debates propelled the advancement of the field. It then focuses on the birth and early development of statistics, particularly the disputes surrounding probability theory and statistical methods.
In the third part, the course will delve into the revolutionary applications of modern statistics, with special emphasis on the contributions of R. A. Fisher and the famous “Lady Tasting Tea” experiment. These examples illustrate how statistics transformed the methodology of scientific research.
Finally, the course will look ahead to future developments in mathematics and statistics, discussing new challenges and opportunities in the era of big data and artificial intelligence.
Through this course, students will come to understand that the development of mathematics and statistics has not been smooth, but rather filled with controversy and innovation. These debates and breakthroughs have not only shaped the disciplines themselves but have also profoundly influenced how we understand and change the world.
